The pyramids of ancient Egypt
are some of the largest structures in the whole world! They are
incredible! Most of the pyramids were built during the Old and Middle Kingdoms.
While there about 80 pyramids in Egypt, the most famous are the pyramids at Giza. Giza is near Cairo, the modern day capital city of Egypt. Cairo is in northern Egypt.
The 3 most famous pyramids at Giza are:
1. The Pyramid of Khufu: This pyramid took 20 years to build and was the tallest structure in the world for over 3,800 years! Even though it is the largest pyramid, it doesn't look the largest! Do you know why?
2. The Pyramid of Khafre: Khafre was the son of Khufu. He built the second largest pyramid at Giza. This pyramid is the only pyramid that still has some of the original casing at the top of the pyramid.
3. The Pyramid of Menkaure: This pyramid is much smaller than the others and the pyramid complex was finished in a hurry as Pharaoh Menkaure died unexpectantly. This was the last of the great pyramids ever to be built!
